Shen Who
It surprises me that although Shen Teh was liked and disliked in her time, her cousin who was thought of as more business-like and respected is also liked and well liked and taken advantage of. Sun somehow woo's over Shen Teh's gentle woman's heart, but he also manipulates and coax's the logic side of Shaui Ta and convinces him of giving him an easier laborious task be using others. It amazes me that the same wrongs can be done two different ways in different scenarios. I thought Sheh Teh as the cousin would be on to Sun's games by now as she refused to marry such a dog as him and as Shaui Ta admits, wished to sue him to rightfully take back the 200 silver dollars. Also, as the baby comes along, Sheh Teh's performance seems to slip. Sun accuses him of being more moody and having possible softer moments. It is also ridiculous to see Sun slip into his manipulative sly ways, suggesting ways of getting a cheaper building in front of Shaui Ta himself. Wang also accuses that Shen Teh hasn't completely gone away as rice is still being set out. There seems so many unexplained clues that I am amazed the character's in this plays suspended believability. Also, I dislike the solution and don't understand how the cousin can only come once a month, and what happens when the baby is born etc....

Kimberly, I like what you say about what Sun does to both Shen Teh and Shui Ta. I do not think I thought of it like that. But, I disagree with you about the ending. I like it and I think it is very powerful, but I agree with you that it is ambiguous.
