One of the most puzzling aspects of the film, Velvet Goldmine, is the spaceship
image. The first time we see this
spaceship, the film is opening with Oscar Wilde’s supposed birth. It seems that the spaceship dropped him on a
door step. This spaceship appears again in
a scene with Arthur at a Brian Slade concert.
There are several references to drugs during this scene, so the
appearance here may have been a hallucination.
None the less, the spaceship does not go unnoticed. Although
the spaceship appears in completely different contexts, there seems to be an
underlying theme. The spaceship may be a
representation of how the characters, such as Oscar Wilde, Arthur, Brian, etc.,
feel like outsiders in society. The
concept of an alien space craft being present in confusing scenes, such as the
discovery of baby Oscar, or Arthur under the influence at a concert discovering
his sexuality seems to signify its representation of the “outsider” persona the
characters possess. This alien spaceship
further displays the characters alienation from the norms of society at the
time, whether it be through their taste in music, fashion, or most noticeably,
their sexuality. I am interested to see
what others think about the appearance of the spaceship and what it means in
the context of the film.
